Today I am here with the review of the very famous and hyped up palette – Kat Von D Shade+Light Eye Contour Palette!
Kat Von D Beauty is available at Sephora in the US and Canada. Unfortunately, Sephora in the Czech republic does not stock it yet. I bought mine at Sephora in Vancouver for 65 CAD + VAT. So it is not definitely cheap one. If you want to see what else I have bought in Sephora, check the haul HERE!
And now let’s start with the review…
Palette comes packed in a cardboard box in black and gold colours with writing in the typical font for all Kat Von D products. It is nice and sleek, looks a bit demonic to me. On the backside, there are names of all eyeshadows.
In the box, you will find the palette itself and then a sheet with a description of recommended usage of each shade and also with tips how to deal with different eye shapes if you want to correct them.
The actual palette is packed in a plastic packaging with beautiful relief on the top. It looks nice and sturdy. If I am not mistaken, originally the palette came in cardboard packaging but this new plastic one is better and definitely more protective. On the backside, there are names of eyeshadows listed again.
Inside of the palette, you will find a nice wide mirror in the lid which is perfect for travelling. The lid itself can stay at a good angle so you do not have to hold it all the time which is always nice.
The palette contains a wide selection of neutral colours of all undertones – cool, warm, and neutral. All colours are marketed as a matte finish, however, some of them look more satin than matte to me. But it might be just my personal impression. Palette will suit to many different skin tones from the fairest to the deepest one. It contains all colours that you possibly need for creation of several everyday matte looks. It is also perfect as a transition palette for your shimmer or colourful eyeshadows.
All colour in the palette are nicely pigmented and their quality is consistent within the palette. Eyeshadow formula is very creamy, pigmented and easy to blend. I find that if you have a harsher brush, it can pick up more powder and then you can experience little fall outs. However, if you use soft brushes and tap off the excess powder before applying on eyes, you will be perfectly fine.
12 Hr Wear Test:
I put eyeshadow into the wear test. I used them without any primer and wore them for about 12 hours. On the picture below, you can see the results. They stayed on very nicely. Yes, at the end of the day they creased a bit and got shiny but nothing dramatic. With the primer or cream based, I wear amazingly throughout the entire day.
- creamy, nicely pigmented eyeshadows
- easy to blend
- great selection of neutral colour with all undertones – cool, warm, neutral
- suits to all skin tones
- wears nicely throughout the day (with a primer on my oily lids)
- kick out a lot of powder (mainly if your brushes are not the softest one)
- a bit expensive
- slight creasing without a primer (on my oily lids)
My final recommendation:
YES, go for it! If you can afford this palette then definitely check it out (www.sephora.com, www.katvondbeauty.com). If you like matte eyeshadows then this is the perfect palette for you. If you are looking for a palette with a selection of transition shades to enrich your collection of shimmery and colourful eyeshadows, this is the palette for you. In my opinion, Kat Von D Shade+Light Eye Contour Palette is definitely worth the hype and I do not regret the money I spent for it.
A little tip:
If you cannot afford this palette or you do not have access to it, don’t be sad. Makeup Revolution is coming with a dupe for this palette (called Ultra Eye Contour – Light and Shade) and based on reviews which I have seen on youtube, it is very good one too. So you can check out this dupe! In the Czech republic, it is available online e.g. PinkPanda.cz or www.MakeupRevolution.cz. For my international readers, check out the official Makeup Revolution website https://www.tambeauty.com/.
