Two weeks ago, I have posted my tips Where to Save & Where to Spend – Skincare Edition, and you guys seem to like it. So in today’s post, I want to share my thoughts on the similar problem but in the makeup area. Does it make sense to spend on high-end, and can you save so money by sticking with drugstore products? If you are interested in my opinions on this topic then keep reading.
Similarly, as in the previous post, let me start with a disclaimer:
The point of this post is not to convince you to spend a huge amount of money on makeup. But in case that you are willing to spend a bit more money on it and you are thinking where to spend and where to save, I am here to share some of my thoughts and tips on this topic.
This entire post is based on my best knowledge on the topic and on my honest opinions and experience. However, you do not have to agree with me. For each of us, things work differently and also everyone can afford or want to spend different amount of money for things like skincare, makeup etc. And it is completely OK! Do not feel offended if you cannot spend money for beauty bits. Those are definitely not the most important things in our life.
And last but not least, all mentioned brands and price ranges apply for the Czech Republic and may vary for other countries (like NYX is not a drugstore brand in the Czech Republic).
WHERE TO SAVE
From my experience, there are mascaras in drugstores that perform as good as high-end one. Moreover, you are supposed to exchange mascara every three months due to hygienic reasons anyway so I do not see any reason why to spend a fortune on it. Most of my favourite mascaras are made by Maybelline, L’oreal, and Essence which is a really affordable brand.
SETTING POWDERS AND BLUSHES
For me, setting powders and blushes belong to the category where you can save some money. My absolute fave is Rimmel Stay Matte Powder which is well known for its quality in the whole beauty world. Very good setting powders are made by NYC and Catrice (both loose and pressed powders). If you want to spend a bit more money but still in low/mid-range then check out NYX and Sephora own brand – their translucent powders are amazing.
With blushes, there is one downside and it is a colour range – not many drugstore brands offer wide colour selection. If you cannot find the right one for you in a drugstore, mid-range brands like NYX, Sephora own brand and INGLOT offer a good one.
LIPSTICK AND LIPLINERS
Lipsticks and lipliners are items on which you can save a money. Drugstores, even those in the Czech Republic, offer a wide range of colours and finishes which will satisfy a lot of lipstick maniac out there. My fave brands are Maybelline and Rimmel, very good one is also Essence and L’oreal. One thing we are missing here is a matte liquid lipstick which is not the common in our drugstores. However, you can check out e.g. NYX and Colourpop which offers them for a good price point.
PRODUCTS IN BETWEEN
FOUNDATION AND CONCEALER
Nowadays, there are amazing foundations and concealers in the drugstore which perform exactly as the high-end one. The thing which is still missing in the drugstore is a good colour range. Most of the drugstore brands are lacking the selection of different undertones and a wider range of shades – usually, those of us with very pale skin or very deep skin tone are struggling with a finding of the right shade.
So my conclusion is:
If you can match your skin tone in the drugstore then do not spend extra money on high-end products in this area. Check out foundations from L’oreal and Rimmel, also Maybelline and Bourjois make a very good one. Great concealers are Maybelline Fit Me! and Bourjois Radiance Reveal Concealer.
If you are not that lucky then go for more high-end products to avoid wearing weird shades on your face 🙂 Very good range of shades offers MAC, INGLOT, NARS or TOO FACED. From the mid-price range, NYX or Sephora own brand has a wider colour selection as well.
WHERE TO SPEND
CONTOUR COLOURS and EYEBROW PRODUCTS
With contouring products and eyebrow products, I can see the similar problem as with foundations and concealers. The major issue of drugstore products is not a quality but the colour selection. Most of the drugstore brands offer just 2-3 shades (usually warm toned) of eyebrow products and usually just 1 (max 2) shades of contour colours and it is the ridiculously low amount. Most of us do not fit into the colour selection and we may end up with weird coloured faces. Moreover, I am not happy with the longevity of the drugstore eyebrow products.
So my overall recommendation is to spend a bit more money on these products. From the mid-range brands, I do recommend NYX and INGLOT, both offer a good selection of shades in both contour and brow products. From the more high-end price point, Benefit and Anastasia Beverly Hills, and MAC are brands well known for good quality products and a wide range of shades.
Although drugstores are full of eyeshadows and eyeshadow palettes, the quality is not there. At least in the Czech Republic, there is no drugstore brand which I could recommend for eyeshadows without any fail. There are some hidden gems of course but you have to look for them a lot. Also, the colour and texture selection is pretty poor here.
In general, I do recommend to save some money and spend them on a good eyeshadow palette or singles from more expensive brands. From the mid-range, I can recommend to check out INGLOT, ZOEVA, and Sephora own brand. And from high-end, there are well-known brands like URBAN DECAY or TOO FACED which makes great eyeshadows. Eyeshadows last for a long time and in opinion, it is worthy to invest in them if you can.
And that’s it for today. I hope you like these tips. And which are the areas where you save/spend money for makeup bits? Let me know in comments below.
Thank you for coming today.
Have an amazing day and be inspired!
